During the 1700s, two enslaved men named Jack and Acton were instrumental to the success of Boston’s prominent Parker Pottery business in Charlestown. Though the Parker pottery’s craftsmanship has been uncovered by archaeologists in historical deposits stretching from Nova Scotia to South Carolina, Jack and Acton’s existence is known today only through a single colonial probate inventory. I contributed research to and edited this remarkable story for CBS News in Boston as part of their Black History Month coverage in February 2023.
