Coming in 2026! A Monumental History: Stories of Red Earthenware Production in Western Massachusetts, the Berkshires and Vermont

Western Massachusetts has a rich history inhabited by various Native American tribes, which was later settled by English Puritans in places like Springfield, Massachusetts and the Connecticut River Valley Region in the seventeenth and eighteenth century. The region also has a history of red earthenware production dating to the 1700s, later followed by stoneware in the 1800s. The most successful type may have been the black glazed teapots produced in Whately, Massachusetts. However, red earthenware production seems to have been more widespread in the 1700s with some production that can be traced back to the Charlestown and South Danvers, Massachusetts area before the American Revolution. This book is the first of its kind to examine documented red earthenware from Western Massachusetts based on surviving objects, period documents and archaeological artifacts. The book also takes a look at some of Vermont’s lesser-known red earthenware businesses, some of which are tied to Central and Western Massachusetts. Stay tuned for publication details!

Available in 2026: An Early Industry of Household Wares: The Red Earthenware of Salem Village, South Danvers, Peabody and Salem, Massachusetts Volume I

The Salem Village, South Danvers (Peabody) and Salem, Massachusetts area has a deep-rooted history, dating back to the seventeenth century, perhaps best-known today for the Salem Witch Trials of 1692 and Salem’s maritime trade in the eighteenth and nineteenth century. However, the area was also the location of one of New England’s most important red earthenware industries, dating back to the 1600s. The area’s pottery businesses were also intertwined with pottery production in Charlestown, Massachusetts before the American Revolution, and the industry in Bristol County, Massachusetts, as well as other parts of New England. This book is the first of its kind to explore the red earthenware produced in this part of coastal Massachusetts through archaeology, historical records and surviving objects. Volume I will run 500-600 pages. Stay tuned for publication details!

Available 2026: An Early Industry of Household Wares: The Red Earthenware of Salem Village, South Danvers, Peabody and Salem, Massachusetts Volume II

The Salem Village, South Danvers (Peabody) and Salem, Massachusetts area has a rich history of Quakers, many of whom were intertwined with local red earthenware production, as well as Quaker potters living elsewhere in New England. The early history of these Quakers is marked by persecution, although it took a long time, but they were eventually met with acceptance. This area was also home to some potters in Salem after 1750, as well as migrants, who influenced local production from France, Germany, Italy and Portugal. This book is the first of its kind to explore the red earthenware produced in this part of coastal Massachusetts through archaeology, historical records and surviving objects. Volume II will run 800-900 pages. Stay tuned for publication details!

America’s Great Awakening and Migration: The Red Earthenware of Western New York

The historic beginnings of the Western New York region in many ways emerged following the American Revolution, and the Treaty of Hartford in 1786, although the area shared a deep-rooted tradition with Native tribes that pre-date contact with Europeans. However, the 1790s and 1800s saw a widespread migration with people relocating from elsewhere in America and Europe. Among the businesses that began to grow was the production of red earthenware, where some potters relocated from elsewhere in the Northeast, the Mid-Atlantic region and Europe. This book is the first of its kind to explore the red earthenware produced in Western New York through archaeology, historical records and surviving objects. $72 for each volume or both for $130, but prices may vary from retailer to retailer.

An Influential Family of Early Potters: The Clarks of New Hampshire and Related Businesses

New Hampshire’s red earthenware industry in the eighteenth century was largely contained to wares imported to the southern part of the state and along the seacoast by potters in Massachusetts, especially those from the pre-1775 industry in Charlestown, Massachusetts. But there was also some local colonial production, such as Samuel Marshall, who operated a red earthenware business in Portsmouth before 1750. There may have also been some obscure potters who are in many ways forgotten today, and others who are only remembered based on one or two objects that survive, including some production in the Concord area that happened as early as 1765. But it was in 1775 when Peter Clark left Braintree, Massachusetts for Lyndeborough, New Hampshire that a transformation happened with the state’s red earthenware industry. Clark and his family helped ignite production in the state for over 100 years that spread through Concord, up towards Lake Winnipesaukee, the White Mountains and into Vermont. This book is the first of its kind to take an in-depth look at the red earthenware made by the Clarks in New Hampshire through archaeology, a historical context, an aesthetic appeal and how this family was instrumental with red earthenware production in New Hampshire and Vermont, circa 1775-1880s. $72 plus shipping, but prices may vary from retailer to retailer.

From One Town Came Many: The Red Earthenware Industry of Ancient North Yarmouth, Maine

The red earthenware industry in North Yarmouth, Maine was established in the 1790s, and for the next century, it flourished through a group of multigenerational family potteries. Many were located at Yarmouth Corner, which included production from at least five family businesses: Brooks, Cleaves, Corliss, Foster and Thomas. Much of this history had been forgotten due to 20th century development and a lack of published documentation. But thanks to historic preservation, archaeologists, museums and family records, the history of this industry has been reidentified. $60 plus shipping, but prices may vary from retailer to retailer.

A City on the River: The Early Red Earthenware of the Hartford, Connecticut Area

The stoneware manufactured in Hartford, Connecticut in the nineteenth century is a well-known subject today, which served a larger area than just the local marketplace, utilizing the Connecticut River for transportation. In fact, some of the stoneware was inspired by the industry in New York City. Although, it was red earthenware that was actually the original type of household pottery produced in the area, dating as early as the 1700s, where some of the early wares may have been influenced by production in Massachusetts. In some years, thousands of pieces of red earthenware were produced, utilizing the local clays, resulting in a wide range of accomplished wares, some of which were embellished with dramatic styles of hand-applied slip decoration. The most famous of the potters were the Seymours, the Goodwins and Hervey Brooks, but there were other potters as well. This book is the first of its kind to take an in-depth look at the various types of wares manufactured in the Hartford, Connecticut area, as well as the variety of domestic red earthenware artifacts recovered along the Connecticut River within eighteenth and nineteenth century archaeological contexts. $58 plus shipping, but prices may vary from retailer to retailer.

A Celebrated Industry: The Historic Wares of Southeastern Massachusetts, Bristol County and Cape Cod

The aesthetics of utilitarian domestic red earthenware are what collectors and museums have been drawn to for more than a century now, although, it was likely an important factor in the marketplace even when red earthenware was originally produced in the eighteenth and nineteenth century. In New England, the wares manufactured in southeastern Massachusetts, Bristol County and Cape Cod were unquestionably at the forefront of the visual appeal of the region’s red earthenware production. The wares produced in this part of Massachusetts have it all: form, glaze, skill and refinement, transforming many of these objects into works of art that can be displayed at any art museum in America. This book is the first of its kind to explore this region’s red earthenware production through archaeology, a historical context, as well as the artistry and creativity behind this industry’s production. $44 plus shipping, but prices may vary from retailer to retailer.

South Amesbury’s Red Earthenware & Stoneware: The 1791-1820 William Pecker Pottery

Red earthenware production in South Amesbury (Merrimacport), Massachusetts, dates to the eighteenth century, supplying households in northeastern Massachusetts, southern New Hampshire and probably other spots in New England, with everyday utilitarian wares. This multi-generational family business lasted for more than 100 years, making it one of the longest standing potteries in New England. The most famous of those employed in South Amesbury was William Pecker, who operated a pottery during the circa 1791-1820 period. Although, it is not widely known that Pecker was one of New England’s earliest potters to produce red earthenware and stoneware, perhaps only the second business to accomplish this feat in New England behind the Parker Pottery in Charlestown, Massachusetts in the 1740s. This book is the first of its kind to explore South Amesbury’s pottery production, the aesthetic appeal of these wars, archaeology and closely examine the stoneware manufactured by William Pecker. $18 plus shipping, but prices may vary from retailer to retailer.

The Dawn of Independence, the Death of an Industry: The Pottery of Charlestown, Massachusetts

The red earthenware industry in Charlestown, Massachusetts supplied households throughout coastal New England with utilitarian wares, circa 1635-1775. The industry was unsurpassed in New England with production recovered as far north as Canada and as far south as the Carolinas. Dozens of potters and a number of businesses made up this industry; the most prominent years of production were 1740-1775. There was even an attempt to produce stoneware in the 1740s in competition with New York City, Philadelphia and Virginia. The identity of this industry was destroyed in 1775 during the Battle of Bunker Hill. More than 200 years later, this identity was revealed when archaeologists excavated part of Charlestown for Boston’s Big Dig Project. These important artifacts provide a better understanding of how far Charlestown’s pottery traveled before 1775. This book is the first of its kind, exploring the history of Charlestown’s industry, the pottery, the exports and its historical significance. $16 plus shipping.

The Moses B. Paige Company: The Last of the Peabody Potteries

Peabody, Massachusetts has a rich history of utilitarian red earthenware production, dating back to the 1730s. The Osborns are likely the best-known potting family today, operating kilns on both sides of Central Street as early as 1736. The number of potters employed in this area was more than any other location in New England in the 18th and 19th centuries, influencing production throughout the region. Among them was Peter Clark, whose family was instrumental in red earthenware production after 1775 in New Hampshire, as well as Osborn family members who relocated to New Hampshire. Demand for local red earthenware production decreased as the mid-19th century approached, and only two potteries remained in Peabody after 1850. Joseph Reed, who had purchased a company from the Osborns at 102 Central Street, manufactured pottery and trained a group of important potters, including Charles Lawrence, who established a significant business in Beverly, Massachusetts about 1866. By 1872, Moses Paige had relocated from Maine, finding employment with Reed, and purchasing the company in 1876. The pottery became known as the Moses B. Paige Company, where Paige accomplished the unthinkable, reviving the local red earthenware tradition, which had largely disappeared elsewhere in New England. This book is the first of its kind, identifying the history of the somewhat forgotten Moses Paige Pottery and the company’s production, which is often misinterpreted today. $12 plus shipping.

The Beverly Pottery: The Wares of Charles A. Lawrence

Born in Danvers, Massachusetts in 1829, Charles Albert (Solares) Lawrence learned about household red earthenware production as an apprentice in Peabody in the 1850s and early 1860s. He established his own pottery business in Beverly around the completion of the Civil War. Lawrence produced traditional household pottery in the early years, often decorated with multiple colors of slip, a style of decoration rarely found in Massachusetts in the 1800s. By the early 1870s, Lawrence introduced a new line of artware to the Beverly and Boston marketplace, which at the time was unique for American production. Only a few years later, American consumers found themselves infatuated with the decorative wares made by some of the best manufacturers in Europe and China at the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exposition. This event triggered the American art pottery movement, a change that Lawrence had already foreseen in the industry. For about forty years, the wares made at the C.A. Lawrence Pottery were among the most innovative products made anywhere in America, bringing together household pottery, artware and commemorative objects unlike any other business in New England. This book is the first of its kind, exploring the life of Charles A. Lawrence, the history of the Beverly Pottery, and the totality of this company’s production. $12 plus shipping.

Potters on the Merrimac: A Century of New England Ceramics

Domestic production of everyday ceramic wares began almost immediately following the establishment of the Massachusetts Bay Colony on the shores of North America. In Essex County, Massachusetts, on the banks of the Merrimack River, generations of families produced ceramic vessels of varying dimensions and purpose, utilizing local clay deposits to fulfill the needs of their community, and ensure the livelihood of their kin. They built workshops, warehouses, kilns, and homes, which passed to the next generation, along with the knowledge of their trade. The curatorial team of the Custom House Maritime Museum, along with Guest Curator and collector Justin W. Thomas, has assembled an exhibit focusing on the production, and material remains of multiple potteries and potting families along the Merrimack River. Primarily from the periods of the eighteenth century prior to the Revolutionary War to the mid-nineteenth century, the exhibit also includes examples from the late nineteenth and early twentieth century Arts and Crafts movement in Newburyport, Massachusetts. The exhibit runs from September 2019 through April 2020. $12 plus shipping.
